VICENTE CARREÑO (CEO)

Dr. Carreño is Founder and President of the Foundation for the Study of Viral Hepatitis (FEHV) and the Foundation for Biomedical Research (IFF). He is currently considered internationally one of the best hepatologist. He received his doctorate degree in 1985 at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomic University of Madrid. He developed his international career at Research Centers in Oxford, Berlin and London, during which, he specialized in hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Dr. Carreño is a member of the European and the American Societies for the Study of Liver Diseases, has been awarded with 10 national and international awards, has chaired nine international conferences and has published ​​330 articles (over 250 of them at international journals). Major accomplishments in his career include the description of a new liver disease, the Mild Idiopathic Ductopenia published in the New England Journal of Medicine, USA and the discovery of a new form of hepatitis C, named occult hepatitis C virus. His professional activity also includes participations in numerous seminars and conferences, both national and international.

INMACULADA CASTILLO (Molecular Biologist)

Inmaculada studied Biology at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid and received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in 1991. She worked at the Hepatology Unit of the Fundacion Jimenez Diaz in Madrid, from 1985 to1988. Then in 1989 she began her collaboration in the Health Sciences Center of the University of Colorado, USA, as a research fellow. In 1990, Inmaculada ended her scholarship and joined the FEHV as a researcher in the division of Molecular Biology and Diagnostics. Since then she has presented 88 papers at international conferences and has published 79 articles in international scientific journals, has collaborated in 41 research projects and has won 5 awards for papers presented at National and International Congresses

JAVIER BARTOLOMÉ (Molecular Biologist)

Javier graduated in Biology in 1983 and received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1991 at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. After graduating, he joined the Hepatology Unit of the Fundación Jiménez Díaz with a research grant from the Ministry of Health. He also worked at the Health Sciences Center of the University of Colorado, USA, during 1989. His contribution to the Foundation began more than 20 years ago as a researcher in the Division of Molecular Biology and Diagnosis.

Throughout his career he has presented over 120 papers in International Congresses and has published numerous articles in international scientific journals. He has participated in 43 research projects and has won 4 awards for papers presented at National and International congresses.

JUAN ANTONIO QUIROGA (Analytical Chemist)

Juan Antonio obtained his Bachelor degree in chemist by the Complutense University of Madrid since 1982. In 1985 he joined the Hepatology Unit of the Jiménez Díaz Foundation as a Research Fellow. He received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 1988 from the Complutense University, Madrid. He conducted his postdoctoral research at the Hygiene Institute of the Georg-August University, Göttingen, Germany (1988). He was a postdoctoral researcher in the Division of Biochemistry and Immunology at the Foundation for the Study of Viral Hepatitis, from 1989 to 1990.

During his career he has presented ​​numerous oral and poster communications at international conferences and has published over 90 articles and book chapters and has participated in more than 20 research projects including R & D programs of the European Union and won three awards for papers presented at national and international conferences.

SILVIA LLORENTE (Medical Laboratory Technician )

Silvia trained as a technician in laboratory and clinical diagnosis in 2001 at the Institute of the Muses of Madrid (2001). In 2002, she worked as Laboratory Technician at the Blood Donor Center of the Red Cross in Madrid. Silvia joined the team of the Foundation in 2004 working as a Lab Technician. During this period, se has presented 5 papers in international congresses and has published three articles in international scientific journals.

GUILLERMINA BARRIL (Nephologist)

Dr. Barril obtained her medical degree in the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid and the doctorate in 1981 in the same  University, becoming a specialty in Nephrology.

After finishing her studies in July 1981, Barril was hired as Interin Assistant at the Hospital Gregorio Marañón, until 1985, when she was offered a position as an Assistant Nephrology at the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa of Madrid.

Her professional development and her continuing medical education have led to Dr. Barril to have an experience of more than 15 years in hemodialysis centers. On the other hand, she has nearly 50 national and international publications related to the field of hepatology and nephrology, many of them in collaboration with the FEHV. She has been honored with several awards and has collaborated on research projects related to the study of renal function in liver diseases of different etiologies. Since 1991 she is the Coordinator of the Group of Viral hepatitis in Dialysis of SEN.

ARTURO PEREZ MOTA (Gastroenterologist)

Dr. Pérez Mota gained his medical degree at the Complutense University of Madrid (1960) and his doctorate in medicine at the Autonomic University of Barcelona in 1974. During his studies, he specialized in gastroenterology and in internal medicine.

His professional career began in the Digestive Diseases School of INP of Madrid (1961-1968) as a medical assistant. After this period, Dr. Pérez Mota obtained a place in Barcelona as a medical doctor for Digestive system of the INP (1968-1974) and he was also part of the team of the School of Digestive Diseases at the Hospital of Santa Cruz and San Pablo of Barcelona as a physician assistant

In 1974 he became Section Chief in the School of Digestive Diseases in the INP of Madrid until 1980, when he gained by public exam the Head of Gastroenterology  at the Hospital Virgen de la Torre Madrid,  remaining at that position until 2006. A year later, in 2007, he joined the team of the FEHV as a Gastroenterologist  Dr. Pérez Mota is member of several medical associations, has published over 200 articles and he is Associated Director of the journal Gastrum.. He has received 4 awards for papers presented at national and international congresses.

ANA SANTAMARTA (Executive Secretary)

Ana began her professional path with the Foundation for the Study of Viral Hepatitis as a junior secretary. Since then, she is a member of the Foundation and she has been involved in it ,recently as executive secretary.

Her career began at the Foundation more than 20 years ago. During this period she has gained experience as international secretary for her role in organizing several international conferences. She is the responsible organizer of the annual meetings of the president, the employers and the supporters of the Foundation, held at the Miguel Ángel Hotel. Se is also the chief secretary of the clinical medical visits of the Foundation.

Mª ISABEL RAMIRO (Degree in Tourist Business and Activities)

María Isabel has a Degree in Tourist Business and Activities by the Official School of Tourism of Madrid since 1987. Before she started working for this Foundation for the Study of Viral Hepatitis (FEVH), she worked as an Executive Assistant and Trilingual Secretary-Seller for several national and international companies.

Since 1991, she has been acting as Supervisor of Medical Protocols, nationally and internationally, Coordinator of the International Congresses organized by the Foundation, person in charge of the Medical Magazine and all the activities organized to obtain funding for the Foundation. Today she is the Financial, Labor and Organizational Controller.
